Leading the way in lab-grown diamond energy transparency and ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Lightbox was created to bring the sparkle of a diamond to more people, more often, through our innovative lab-grown technology. But creating something new, like most things, also leaves an impact on the planet. When we launched, we promised to bring transparency to this new industry, and our commitment to reducing the footprint of our stones is a huge part of this.

WHERE IS THE LAB-GROWN DIAMOND INDUSTRY TODAY?

To create a lab-grown diamond you have to heat the feedstock gasses in a reactor to around the temperature of the sun, a process that inherently requires energy.
But the amount of energy, the source of that energy, and the accountability of its producers can all vary.

Our Accountability

Every polished carat of Lightbox lab-grown diamond takes an average of 350 kWh of energy to grow. We believe that every lab-grown diamond created consumes similar levels of energy to Lightbox -- or in some cases, much higher.

So what does 350 kWh equate to? Put simply, it’s about the same amount of energy required to manufacture three pairs of jeans. So while it’s not huge, it still needs to be less (though we do promise you’ll still be wearing your Lightbox pieces long after those jeans!).

We’ve worked hard to understand the energy our stones consume and calculate the ways we can reduce the environmental impact of each one. Read on to find out more about what we’re doing next.

What we're doing next

100% Renewable energy sources

In 2021, we reached our goal of 50% of the energy we use to grow our diamonds coming from renewable sources. We have committed to increasing this to 100% by the end of 2022.

Our commitment: A lab-grown diamond grown using energy from sources with a 0% carbon footprint by the end of 2022.

GOING EVEN FURTHER TO REDUCE OUR ENERGY CONSUMPTION, REGARDLESS OF SOURCE

We’re not stopping there. Although we will soon only be using energy from renewable sources, our next step is to go further and reduce the total amount of energy used per carat of polished lab-grown diamond.

Our commitment: Reducing our energy consumption per polished carat by 5% every year. This means in 8 years, we will have reduced this by a third - and the remaining energy used will all be renewable.
